Senior who wants to do a little surfing, texting, emailing needs a new, small gadget - but what?

Something small that does quite a lot but iPod, iPad, Blackberry - what? There's so much out there. Talk to me techies. What's the best thing if you could have anything? What's the most cost-effective? There could be two answers here. Also, Gma doesn't have a computer, so that's a consideration.
